Swingmusiken lärde jag känna redan som liten. Den fyllde vårt hem i alla dess hörn under en period av min barndomstid och blev lika naturligt som maten jag åt och sömnen jag delade med nattmörkret i mitt sovrum.
En stark inspirationskälla var min äldsta bror och hans svängande musikkompisar som förkovrade sina färdigheter i vår källare. Min bror spelade trummor, samma instrument som jag själv valde när jag växt till mig något.
Jag minns alla de stunder jag satt fastnaglad på min stol, närvarande i ett försök att insupa allt som hände under deras jam sessions, för liten att få spela men tillräckligt stor för att ta till mig swingmusikens enorma dimensioner.
I vardagsrummet stod en radiogrammofon, en möbel av den stora dimensionen, i vilken de svarta stenkakorna snurrade tryggt och säkert. Ur högtalarna, inbyggda någonstans i den ockrafärgade möbeln, strömmade rytmer och toner av Gene Krupa, Benny Goodman, Louis Armstrong, Dizzy Gillespie, Woody Herman mfl. Deras swing gick inte att ignorera, den fyllde mitt sinne med en lustkänsla som blev en del av mig själv. Det gav mig med tiden tillfredsställelsen att få spela med flera fantastiska musiker med samma musikaliska övertygelse.
Under åren har jag bytt ut trumstockar mot målarpenslar men swingmusiken har för alltid en given plats inom mig, liksom dessa fragment av mina musikaliska barndomsminnen.
